The Difference Between Internet Marketing and Just Being on the InternetThe term internet marketing is thrown around very loosely these days. I guess it can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people in a sense, depending on the business that you're in. But essentially, internet marketing is simply using the new and vast media...the internet...to market your products or services.
Pretty simple right?
You get online and you start marketing. Well, it's not as simple as that unfortunately.
Here's what most people will do...they'll get online and put up what they think to be a nice looking website full of fancy graphics, and silly animations, put a little bit of info about their product, and a ton of info about themselves, stumble through the hosting and getting it up online...and then sit and wait. And wait...and wait...and wait some more!
But the problem is that this is closer to a train wreck than it is internet marketing.
If someone does happen to stumble upon your website...which they very likely will unless you've actually told them the URL, they might stay at your site, but only in amazement, much in the way that people will sit and stare at a train wreck.
This my friend, is not internet marketing. This is simply having a website (a bad one) up on the internet. There's a huge difference.
How Internet Marketing Should Look in the Beginning at Least...
So first of all, you should know that just building a website doesn't mean anybody will ever come to it. The building of the website is just a step in the process. The good part is that that's where most of your competition stops so just knowing this puts you far ahead of the curve.
Even more importantly is how you build your website.
Before you even begin you need to really have a very specific idea in mind of what you want to accomplish with that site. You need to know exactly who you're targeting to come to that site...who your customers are, who your prospects are, etc. The more you know about this the more success you can expect, and that's before you even write a single word on your site. I'm simply talking about the structure and navigation of your site.
When you do put your message on your site, the content... please don't make the mistake that millions of people who are clogging up the internet have done. Don't talk obsessively about yourself. You need to always show people the benefits that THEY will receive for doing business, or teaming up with you. It's not about you, it's about the prospect. It's about the READER. ALWAYS!
There's much more to the sales message than I could possibly get into here, but that's a good start...focusing on the target audience.
If I Build It, Will They Come?
We all wish it were that easy. The internet is a vast, vast place. There are billions and billions of web pages online all vying for attention. Luckily most people all do it the hope and pray method, and we all know that hope is not a strategy so you luck out there.
There are things that you MUST do to get visitors to your website...it's called website traffic, and you want as much of it as humanly possible. But...you want targeted traffic, from the exact people who WANT to read your message. You want to get yourself right in front of them. Once you've done that, you increase your chances of success drastically.
I will continue to post more material about internet marketing on my blog, but it's important that you take note of what I've said here, because these are the make or break mistakes that people make before they even get a good chance to start.
Oh, and by the way, stay away from the crazy graphics, bright backgrounds, and animations on your site, unless they serve a very, very useful purpose. You'll thank me for that advice later.
